{"id":24928,"date":"2017-11-20T17:45:16","date_gmt":"2017-11-20T17:45:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/?p=24928"},"modified":"2017-11-20T17:45:16","modified_gmt":"2017-11-20T17:45:16","slug":"asian-catering-federation-welcomes-takeaway-tax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2017\/11\/20\/asian-catering-federation-welcomes-takeaway-tax\/","title":{"rendered":"Asian Catering Federation welcomes \u2018takeaway tax\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yawar Khan, the Chairman of the Asian Catering Federation (ACF), which represent the interests of 35,000 restaurants and takeaways in the UK, has given a guarded welcome to Chancellor Phillip Hammond\u2019s proposal to introduce a levy on single use plastic packaging.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-24930\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Khan-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Khan-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Khan-768x1160.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Khan-678x1024.jpg 678w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Khan-696x1051.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Khan-1068x1613.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Khan-278x420.jpg 278w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Khan.jpg 1356w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/>On Wednesday, the Chancellor is expected initiate a debate into the issue which Greenpeace has deemed &#8220;a global emergency&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, Khan is calling for any new tax to be kept to minimum and for assistance to tackle the severe problems facing the curry industry \u2013 staff shortages, rising business rates and the high rate of VAT on the hospitality sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe need to reduce the problem cause by plastics, which are polluting the oceans and poisoning marine wildlife,\u201d said Khan, adding, \u201cThe 5p tax on plastic carrier bags has been sufficient to cut their usage by 85% &#8211;
