A passenger in the car, a man in his 20s, was trapped in the wreckage and had sustained serious injuries to his head and pelvis.

“Ambulance staff and medics worked closely with the fire service at the scene to carefully extricate him from the car and after around 40 minutes he was cut free.

“The man was given pain relief and fully immobilised with a neck collar, spinal board and pelvic binder before being taken by land ambulance on blue lights to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

“The driver from a second car involved, a woman in her 40s, sustained minor facial injuries.

“Due to the mechanism of the collision, the woman was immobilised with a neck collar and spinal board as a precaution before being taken to Heartlands Hospital.

“No one else was injured in the collision.”

Joynob Chaudhury, a 43-year-old local, said, “It was about 7.30pm and all of us came outside.

“There were lots of flashing lights. There were lots of police and ambulances and the fire brigade.

“The driver was stuck in the car. There were so many people out that the police had to move everyone away. They were there all night.”

Shabana Begum said her family heard a noise before going outside to discover a horrific scene.

She said, “I heard a big bang. My kids thought it was a firework.

“When we came out, there were cars smashed into each other. When the car was coming down the other way, it smashed into another car and swirled around and hit a couple of other cars.

“Me and my neighbours called the police, ambulance and fire brigade.

“They cut one out of the car and the other was stuck in it.

“It was so scary. At 1am, they came and took the body.”

Mrs S Khan, who was one of the first on the scene, said, ”I heard loud bangs, about three. I came out because I thought a bomb had gone off.

“I came out and all I could see was carnage everywhere.

“I was looking for the driver of the Seat Leon but couldn’t locate where he was, then my husband saw him in the back of the car – he’d been thrown back.

“We were on to the emergency services.

“It was really disturbing. My husband was talking to the other person in the car, he was moving.

“Then the ambulance and everyone took over. I was awake all night.”

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or saw the black Seat Leon being driven in the build-up to the crash, is asked to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101 or by emailing FL_COLLISION_INVEST@west-midlands.pnn.police.uk and quote log 2616 16/10.

After a horrific crash in Small Heath, one man has died and two people have been injured.
