{"id":24071,"date":"2017-09-13T12:21:50","date_gmt":"2017-09-13T11:21:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/?p=24071"},"modified":"2017-09-13T12:21:50","modified_gmt":"2017-09-13T11:21:50","slug":"boy-takes-life-relentless-bullying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2017\/09\/13\/boy-takes-life-relentless-bullying\/","title":{"rendered":"Boy Takes Own Life After &#8216;Relentless&#8217; Bullying"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>15-year-old Brandon Rayat ended his own life after relentless bullying from classmates, which included threatening to rape his mother.<\/h2>\n<p>The teenager suffered months of torture, being taunted by bullies who called him a paedophile and a \u2018faggot\u2019 every day for more than a year.<\/p>\n<p>A social media account was even set up, in the name of sexual predator Jimmy Saville, from which Brandon was bombarded with messages.<\/p>\n<p>In one instance, Brandon was shown a picture of his house on Google maps after an ICT lesson, and the bullies told him, \u201cWe know where you live. We are going to rape your mum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Leicester school boy wished to be a doctor when he grew up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bullies got in his head and sucked the life out of him. It just wasn\u2019t Brandon,\u201d said Brandon\u2019s mother, Mina, who left her job as a hairdresser to support her son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrandon was a handsome boy and a lot of girls took a shine to him as he got older, I think the bullies were jealous of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe even shaved his hair off so he could be like them, he just wanted to be accepted. He wanted to go to university and become a doctor, he had his whole life planned out,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut these boys were relentless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon felt he could no longer go to school following the physical, psychological and online abuse.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2015, he suffered a \u2018breakdown\u2019, and his parents realized how serious things he become.<\/p>\n<p>Mum Mina said, \u201cHe had started telling me he didn\u2019t want to go to school and that he didn\u2019t like the people there, but I didn\u2019t realise how bad things were until he had a breakdown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe came running into the house one day and he was screaming, \u201cI want to die, I want to die\u201d. I had never seen him like this before, so I made a GP appointment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon was referred to The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), which recommended that he return to school.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2015, Brandon was prescribed anti-depressants, which Mina says only made him feel worse.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon first attempted to take his life in January of last year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Brandon-rayat-text-screen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-24073\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Brandon-rayat-text-screen-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Brandon-rayat-text-screen-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Brandon-rayat-text-screen-768x1147.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Brandon-rayat-text-screen-686x1024.jpg 686w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Brandon-rayat-text-screen-696x1039.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Brandon-rayat-text-screen-1068x1595.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Brandon-rayat-text-screen-281x420.jpg 281w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Brandon-rayat-text-screen.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a>Over an eight-month period, the anti-depressant dosage was increased four times.<\/p>\n<p>Coroners concluded, in an inquest held last month, that opportunities had been missed by mental health services to assess Brandon face-to-face after he had told a psychiatrist that he had tried to strangle himself 11 days before his death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told the mental health service I was worried he was planning to do something becaues he was slowly throwing things away and giving away his belongings, he had nothing in his room,\u201d said Mina.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt that he was preparing to take his own life, but they told me just to keep an eye on him every 15 minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon\u2019s parents, Mina and Raj, have now started the Stop Ignoring Me campaign, which aims to criminalise bullying and introduce mental health and anti-bullying training into the school curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrandon was always making us laugh, even through his illness,\u201d Mina said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been an emotionally draining process, but we will continue to fight for him.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>15-year-old Brandon Rayat ended his own life after relentless bullying from classmates, which included threatening to rape his mother.
