{"id":23920,"date":"2017-09-05T18:23:13","date_gmt":"2017-09-05T17:23:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/?p=23920"},"modified":"2017-09-05T18:23:13","modified_gmt":"2017-09-05T17:23:13","slug":"police-investigate-deaths-newborns-indian-hospital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2017\/09\/05\/police-investigate-deaths-newborns-indian-hospital\/","title":{"rendered":"Police Investigate Deaths of Newborns At Indian Hospital"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Indian police are investigating the deaths of 49 children who died at a hospital In Farrukhabad, in the state of Uttar Pradesh.<\/h2>\n<p>At least 30 children are thought to have died from &#8220;perinatal asphyxia&#8221;, a condition caused by reduced oxygen levels during childbirth, at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, at least 160 minors died at a Gorakhpur hospital, Baba Raghav Das, also in Uttar Pradesh. Allegedly some of those deaths were also caused by lack of oxygen.<\/p>\n<p>Senior government officials, however, deny that was the case in either hospital.<\/p>\n<p>A government report in the most recent investigation blamed 30 deaths on medical staff, which prompted the launch of a police investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The Press Trust of India reported that the 30 died whilst in intensive care at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The news agency said that a further 19 newborn deaths were not part of the report by the government.<\/p>\n<p>All 49 deaths happened between 21<sup>st<\/sup> July and 20<sup>th<\/sup> August.<\/p>\n<p>Police said that in the case of the Farrukhabad hospital, staff &#8220;did not insert oxygen pipes [into infants&#8217; windpipes] after birth&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Indian police are investigating the deaths of 49 children who died at a hospital In Farrukhabad, in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
