{"id":2384,"date":"2006-11-14T15:19:54","date_gmt":"2006-11-14T15:19:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2006\/11\/14\/farmers-urged-to-go-halal\/"},"modified":"2016-01-06T16:43:34","modified_gmt":"2016-01-06T16:43:34","slug":"farmers-urged-to-go-halal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2006\/11\/14\/farmers-urged-to-go-halal\/","title":{"rendered":"Farmers urged to go Halal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"260\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"184\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/Image\/ArticleImages\/ShoeebRiaz.jpg\"\/>DEMANDS\u00a0for halal meat could open up lucrative new markets for hard-pressed British farmers, business have been told.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Consultant Shoeeb Riaz told the annual meeting of the West Midlands Minority Ethnic Business Forum that an Advantage West Midlands-funded feasibility report, looking at the benefits of catering for the halal market, would be completed by the end of the year.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0\u201cIf agreed, funding could be in place by February of next year with a commercial project underway by the end of 2007,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0Mr Riaz said that in Australia a whole new industry had sprung up around demands from the Muslim community for halal meat. \u201cWith new countries which have large Muslim populations about the join the EU, Britain \u2013 and the West Midlands \u2013stands to become the hub of a \u00a330 million market,\u201d he added.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Farmers producing livestock for the halal market would have to meet strict accreditation standards. But, he added, that with meat being preserved via canning, and aluminium foil or vacuum packing they would be able to benefit from UK and export sales all the year round. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0\u201cThe Qurbani Project is a business enterprise \u2013 it is not restricted any one race of religion,\u201d he added.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>John Edwards, chief executive of Advantage West Midlands, told the meeting, held at the Quality Hotel, Walsall, that minority ethnic businesses would have a major opportunity to help revitalise the regional economy. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Mr Edwards said that 47,000 minority ethnic businesses had already been established in the West Midlands, many of them highly successful.
