{"id":23078,"date":"2017-08-03T15:13:07","date_gmt":"2017-08-03T14:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/?p=23078"},"modified":"2017-08-03T15:39:10","modified_gmt":"2017-08-03T14:39:10","slug":"bearded-boyz-step-clear-bin-backlog-following-strike-deadlock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2017\/08\/03\/bearded-boyz-step-clear-bin-backlog-following-strike-deadlock\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Bearded Boyz\u2019 step in to clear bin backlog following strike deadlock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A group of Birmingham Muslims, known as the \u2018Bearded Broz\u2019, have taken it upon themselves to clean the streets in response to the ongoing Birmingham bin strike.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More than a dozen men from the local community volunteered to clear the backlog of bin bags, clearing four truckloads of rubbish to Tyseley tip and pledging to do more this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Naveed Sadiq, spokesman for the Broz, said the team could no longer wait and decided something needed to be done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rubbish has been piled up like pyramids on the road and we\u2019re not happy with the response of our councillors. We could not leave it with the stench if this strike is going to go on. So, we decided to do something ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>Naveed went on to say that the volunteers are looking to expand on their initial clean-up of six Small Heath streets and have had requests from across Birmingham. The group has appealed to the council and local community to loan them the vehicles to be able to continue their work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe response has been overwhelming, we are now getting requests from other streets and neighbourhoods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re all volunteers, nobody\u2019s getting paid, because we want to help our community. As Muslims we feel it\u2019s very important to do that. You can be a Muslim, you can be a Brummie you can be British and you can be proud to be from where you are\u201d, added another Bearded Bro.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re here, we\u2019re positive, we\u2019re contributing. All these guys have taken time out, some have come straight from work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019ve got vehicles, you\u2019ve got a van get in touch with us and let\u2019s clean up Birmingham.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The council is currently working on a ward to ward basis in its attempt to clear the backlog.
