{"id":2305,"date":"2006-09-15T16:46:20","date_gmt":"2006-09-15T16:46:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2006\/09\/15\/life-sentence-for-murder-husband\/"},"modified":"2016-01-06T16:37:16","modified_gmt":"2016-01-06T16:37:16","slug":"life-sentence-for-murder-husband","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2006\/09\/15\/life-sentence-for-murder-husband\/","title":{"rendered":"Life sentence for murder husband"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"232\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"157\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"1\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/Image\/ArticleImages\/deeptianuragweb1.jpg\"\/>A MAN who planned and murdered his wife on the campus of a leading Midlands university has been jailed for life.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Anurag Johri bludgeoned his wife Deepti Anurag <em>(pictured right)<\/em>\u00a0to death with a baseball bat in November last year at the University of Central England\u2019s Perry Barr campus.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>He later attempted to commit suicide but was found by police and rushed to hospital.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>34-year-old Johri was found guilty of his wife\u2019s murder at Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Det Insp Derek Quinn, of West Midlands Police, said Johri\u2019s conviction was a \u201cvictory for justice\u201d<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;Deepti Anurag was a vibrant and intelligent woman from India who arrived with her husband Anurag Johri in the UK in 2003\u201d, he said.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;When this relationship deteriorated however, Johri murdered her by bludgeoning her to death. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;Yesterday&#8217;s conviction and today&#8217;s sentence is a victory for justice. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;I would like to personally thank staff at UCE for their support who helped their colleagues at West Midlands Police.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Sentencing Johri, Judge Mr Justice Gray told him: &#8220;Your attack on her using a baseball bat as a weapon was prolonged and ferocious.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;You struck her on at least four occasions, fracturing her skull in three different places.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;I have no doubt that the attack was carefully planned and premeditated.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Anurag Johri, a PhD student at the University of Central England (UCE), had confided to other members of staff about problems she was having with her estranged husband, Birmingham Crown Court was told.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Gareth Walters, prosecuting, told the court Johri bludgeoned his wife to death because he could not accept that she had become financially independent and had left him. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Johri had pre-planned the murder after buying a baseball bat a day before the murder. He had also, the court heard, logged onto Google to try and search for tips on killing with a baseball bat and not getting caught.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Mr Walters told the court that on the day of the murder Johri visited his wife at the business school on UCE campus where she worked. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#13;<\/p>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"157\" align=\"right\" summary=\"\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"118\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"157\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"1\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/Image\/ArticleImages\/JohriWeb1(1).jpg\"\/><\/td>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n        <\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>&#13;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span class=\"blackTextSmall\"><strong>Anurag Johri<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;\n            <\/td>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n        <\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nHe hid a recording device before returning with a bag of presents and the baseball bat. <\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>He waited until she was alone before entering the room she was in with the bag of presents. After a short conversation between them he left, only to return later with the baseball bat which he had hid in a room opposite.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;In short he beat his wife with the baseball bat over the head from which she died,&#8221; said Mr Walters.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>CCTV cameras had captured Johri in the moments leading up to the murder while the recording device left by the defendant had recorded sounds including Mrs Anurag\u2019s screams.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Johri had dragged his wife\u2019s body under a desk before fleeing and eventually attempting to commit suicide that night. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Mr Walters continued: &#8220;The prosecution case in short is that when his wife left him and then became more and more independent of him he could not stand it.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>He described Johri as the \u201cdomineering partner\u201d in the relationship, adding, \u201cthis was a man prepared. He had planned all this. This was a man who knew precisely what he was doing, who was in control of his actions.
