Adam Peaty won gold and Jazz Carlin took home a silver as Great Britain claims its first medals for this year\u2019s Olympics.<\/p>\n
21-year-old Peaty beat his own record winning the 100m breaststroke in 57.13 seconds. Carlin meanwhile secured a silver in women’s 400m freestyle.<\/p>\n
Peaty interestingly had a fear of water as a child and is now the second British person to win gold for swimming since Adrian Moorhouse in 1988.<\/p>\n
\u201cI did it for my country and that means so much for me,\u201d the City of Derby swimmer proudly said.<\/p>\n
The swimmer\u2019s grandmother Mavis tweeted her happiness over his win writing, \u201cMy Grandson has done it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Peaty was first a world record holder with a time of 57.92 seconds and has lowered it by 0.79. Carlin meanwhile missed gold to USA’s Katie Ledecky however the 25-year-old was delighted with her win.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can’t believe it. I’m on the edge of tears.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was in the pool room watching Adam and I had goosebumps on the block.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo see your team-mate achieve a new world record and become\u00a0an\u00a0Olympic champion right before you swim definitely got me pumped up.\u201d<\/p>\n
