{"id":15770,"date":"2016-07-08T11:37:12","date_gmt":"2016-07-08T10:37:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/?p=15770"},"modified":"2016-07-08T11:39:05","modified_gmt":"2016-07-08T10:39:05","slug":"penny-appeal-volunteers-make-ramadan-remember","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2016\/07\/08\/penny-appeal-volunteers-make-ramadan-remember\/","title":{"rendered":"Penny Appeal Volunteers Make it a Ramadan to Remember"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Volunteers for international humanitarian charity Penny Appeal have made it a Ramadan to remember by giving up over 700 hours of their time to help those in need in their own communities as part of the charity\u2019s \u2018Love Thy Neighbour\u2019 programme.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of people around the country helped with Penny Appeal\u2019s UK aid work, from serving hot meals for the homeless and decorating properties damaged by flooding, to visiting children in hospital and welcoming refugees.<\/p>\n<p>Members of #TeamOrange, the name given to Penny Appeal\u2019s volunteer and fundraising family, have regularly helped others during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which started on the 5<sup>th<\/sup> of June.<\/p>\n<p>Despite fasting, working, studying and caring for their families, they have made the time and found the energy to support people in desperate need.<\/p>\n<p>Penny, the charity\u2019s bus, has also been present at many of the activities, showcasing the \u2018Serving in the Community\u2019 ethos that is at the centre of Penny Appeal\u2019s \u2018Love Thy Neighbour\u2019 UK work.<\/p>\n<p>Penny Appeal\u2019s community action and support over Ramadan has included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Over 2,355 meals provided to the homeless, vulnerable and refugees in Wakefield, Leeds, Rochdale, Carlisle and Coventry<\/li>\n<li>Over 435 gifts delivered to children in hospitals and hospices, including University College London Hospitals, Martin House Hospice in Wetherby, Leeds General Infirmary, and Eden Valley Hospice &amp; Jigsaw in Carlisle<\/li>\n<li>A house and community centre in Carlisle redecorated following Storm Desmond floods<\/li>\n<li>Multi-faith community iftaars in Batley, Coventry, Blackburn and Burnley<\/li>\n<li>Plus dozens of fundraising car washes, street collections, supermarket bag packs and more, right across the UK, including Nottingham, Nuneaton, Leicester, Sheffield.
