{"id":15731,"date":"2016-07-07T15:56:53","date_gmt":"2016-07-07T14:56:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/?p=15731"},"modified":"2016-07-07T15:56:53","modified_gmt":"2016-07-07T14:56:53","slug":"calm-after-the-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2016\/07\/07\/calm-after-the-storm\/","title":{"rendered":"Calm after the Storm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At this year\u2019s Eid celebration in Small Heath, Labour MP Jack Dromey called for unity in the face of racism.<\/p>\n<p>After reports of racism and xenophobic attacks following the EU leave campaign success, Dromey addressed Muslims,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody, because of the colour of their skin or accents of their voice, should be abused in the streets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEid is a day of joy, of empathy of care for the poor and it\u2019s also a day of solidarity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to celebrate the remarkable traditions of Birmingham, the most diverse city in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever addressed a meeting quite as big as this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s not just you, it\u2019s Vasikhi, it\u2019s the Hindus, it\u2019s the Irish, it\u2019s the proud English, all celebrating their different traditions in this great, diverse city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraditions that we can be proud of and we learn so much from one another. But it\u2019s important today that we also assert solidarity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn celebrating the great day which is Eid, let\u2019s all assert our utter determination that we will never, ever see the cancer of racism divide our city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBirmingham is stronger, fairer, better city thanks to the successive waves who have come to our cities and to our shores.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce again my friends, Eid Mubarak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>2016\u2019s Eid celebration in Small Heath saw a gathering of over 80,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At this year\u2019s Eid celebration in Small Heath, Labour MP Jack Dromey called for unity in the face of racism.
