{"id":14018,"date":"2016-05-16T11:09:57","date_gmt":"2016-05-16T10:09:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/?p=14018"},"modified":"2016-05-16T11:09:57","modified_gmt":"2016-05-16T10:09:57","slug":"bhs-in-breakdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2016\/05\/16\/bhs-in-breakdown\/","title":{"rendered":"BHS in Breakdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite being a feature of Birmingham\u2019s high-street for over 80 years, historic retailer <em>British Homes Store, has collapsed. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>With all 164 of its stores under threat, including branches in Solihull, Walsall, Merry Hill, Redditch, Wolverhampton and Stratford Upon Avon, the company\u2019s breakdown has led to wide-scale job fears amongst staff.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for BHS said it called administrators after being unable to secure a rescue package to save the firm.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the retail giant was bought for \u00a31, by consortium Retail Acquisitions, from entrepreneur Sir Philip Green.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a reported offer by Sir Philip of \u00a380 million towards BHS pensions, the retailer has racked up debts of more than \u00a31.3 billion, including a pension fund deficit of \u00a3571 million.<\/p>\n<p>Rival retailer, <em>Sports Direct, <\/em>have expressed interest over-taking a portion of BHS\u2019s stores, however will only do so under the condition that it is absolved of any responsibility of pension liabilities.<\/p>\n<p>The collapse of BHS would be the biggest retail failure since the closure of the Woolworths franchise in 2008, resulting in the loss of almost of 30,000.<\/p>\n<p>Experts say BHS has been victim to years of under-investment, causing its range and estate to look tired and dated.<\/p>\n<p>The high-street chain was thrown a lifeline last month when creditors backed two company voluntary arrangements in order to revive the business by cutting the cost of its leases and preventing widespread store closures.<\/p>\n<p>However, the arrangements fell through when a \u00a360 million loan, making up a significant part of the deal, has not been secured.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Rundle, head of trading at ETX Capital, said: \u201cBHS may have been another Woolworths that struggled to adapt to the new retail world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the same pressures that squeezed the life out of BHS are being felt across the UK retail sector today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the Press Association, Mr Chappell said: \u201cNo one is to blame, it was a combination of bad trading and not being able to raise enough money from the property portfolio. In the end, we just couldn\u2019t reach an agreement with Arcadia over pensions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that he will continue to work with the administrators Duff &amp; Phelps to \u201cfind a solution post the administration\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Despite being a feature of Birmingham\u2019s high-street for over 80 years, historic retailer British Homes Store, has collapsed.
