{"id":12255,"date":"2016-01-29T12:16:42","date_gmt":"2016-01-29T12:16:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/?p=12255"},"modified":"2016-01-29T15:30:44","modified_gmt":"2016-01-29T15:30:44","slug":"councillor-afzal-fails-to-step-down-as-lord-mayor-elect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2016\/01\/29\/councillor-afzal-fails-to-step-down-as-lord-mayor-elect\/","title":{"rendered":"Councillor Afzal Fails to Step Down as Lord Mayor-Elect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Councillor Muhammad Afzal has refused to resign the position of Lord Mayer-Elect, despite being urged by Labour Leader John Clancy.<\/p>\n<p>The Birmingham Councillor recently came under-fire when he made derogatory comments about the government\u2019s Prevent-anti-terror scheme, accusing David Cameron of being an Islamophobe as well as urging people to oppose the new legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Afzal later denied the comments, despite the emergence of audio footage confirming he had made the controversial remarks.<\/p>\n<p>In a long-awaited statement, Mr Afzal, who is also the chairman of Birmingham Central Mosque, stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"td_quote td_quote_left\"><p>&#8220;I should have chosen my words more carefully &#8211; of course I fully support Prevent.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;I have a good relationship with counter terrorism officers in Birmingham and have ensured that Prevent training has been delivered at Birmingham Central Mosque.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Labour leader of Birmingham City Council, John Clancy, had called upon the besieged Labour representative to \u201cconsider his position\u201d after the intial complaints emerged.<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Clancy explains: \u201cI\u2019ve spoken to Coun. Afzal face to face since the recordings have been made available and repeated what I said over the weekend to him, repeated with more strength.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe in these circumstances &#8211; although it is a matter for the Labour group \u2013 Coun. Afzal should consider his position as Lord Mayor-elect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his weekend statement about the Lord Mayor-elect\u2019s comments, Councillor Clancy had stressed he and the council were fully supportive of government programme Prevent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first thing I must stress is that I do not agree with the reported comments, which in no way reflect the position of Birmingham City Council,\u2019\u2019 he had said.<\/p>\n<p>If that wasn\u2019t enough to add to the list of errors made by the councilman, further complaints have emerged after Mr Afzal dismissed comments made by prominent group Muslim Women\u2019s Network UK regarding forced marriage and domestic abuse.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12258\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12258\" style=\"width: 238px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/38824c8-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12258\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12258\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/38824c8-1.jpg\" alt=\"Muslim Women\u2019s Network UK's Shaista Gohir\" width=\"238\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/38824c8-1.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/38824c8-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/38824c8-1-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/38824c8-1-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/38824c8-1-75x75.jpg 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12258\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Muslim Women\u2019s Network UK&#8217;s Shaista Gohir<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The nationally respected group chaired by Shaista Gohir, MBE had organised a meeting at Birmingham\u2019s Central Mosque to create awareness about possible issues plaguing the Asian community.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter of complaint , Ms. Gohir claims they were left angered at the \u2018dismissive\u2019 attitude of Mr Afzal who supposedly disregarded the comments with flippant remarks.<\/p>\n<p>In her letter, Ms Gohir said \u201cWe provided examples of case studies from our helpline and explained that other women\u2019s helplines across the country were regularly receiving calls on forced marriages and that a high percentage of these concerned Muslim women and girls, particularly from Pakistani background.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr Afzal responded by saying forced marriage was no longer a problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we pointed out that UK Government Force Marriage Unit statistics indicated that significant numbers of victims were from the West Midlands, Mr Afzal responded that the government figures were exaggerated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe felt that Mr Afzal was dismissive as he went on to say that many marriages took place at the mosque, that the couples who got married were happy and that the mosque would know if forced marriages were taking place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were made to feel that our claims about forced marriage being a problem were dishonest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Gohir continues in her letter: \u201cMr Afzal responded by saying more men than women suffered domestic violence these days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe argued that although men did suffer from domestic violence, by far the larger number was made up of women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe then went on to state that \u2018domestic violence was happening mainly in the Christian community because they get drunk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the end of the conversation it was clear that the trustees, and especially Mr Afzal, were not interested in women\u2019s issues and had little, if any, intention of working with us on any women\u2019s rights and issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senior members of the Labour group have described Mr Afzal\u2019s position as untenable, with discussion regarding his imminent position within the Labour party ensuing on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Councillor Muhammad Afzal has refused to resign the position of Lord Mayer-Elect, despite being urged by Labour Leader John Clancy.
