{"id":12234,"date":"2016-01-27T12:05:30","date_gmt":"2016-01-27T12:05:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/?p=12234"},"modified":"2016-01-27T12:17:14","modified_gmt":"2016-01-27T12:17:14","slug":"mp-rodger-godsiff-backs-birmingham-dads-battle-for-wonder-drug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2016\/01\/27\/mp-rodger-godsiff-backs-birmingham-dads-battle-for-wonder-drug\/","title":{"rendered":"MP Roger Godsiff Backs Birmingham Dads Battle for \u2018Wonder Drug\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Birmingham MP Roger Godsiff is urging the Prime Minister to over turn decisions to deny life-saving medicine to cancer sufferer Khalid Younis.<\/p>\n<p>The father-of-four was diagnosed with a chronic form of Myeloid Leukaemia and is being treated at Birmingham\u2019s Queen Elizabeth Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in June, The Kings Heath local was told that the only available treatment left to use was Ponatinib, a drug that is widely available in Scotland and Wales, but not in England.<\/p>\n<p>Younis was later informed by medics that his case was \u2018not exceptional\u2019 enough by the Cancer Drugs Fund (CDF) to warrant the treatment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12237\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12237\" style=\"width: 365px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/younis-and-MP.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12237\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12237\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/younis-and-MP-300x259.jpg\" alt=\"MP Rodger Godsiff &amp; Khalid Younis\" width=\"365\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/younis-and-MP-300x259.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/younis-and-MP-768x664.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/younis-and-MP-116x100.jpg 116w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/younis-and-MP-50x43.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/younis-and-MP-75x65.jpg 75w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/younis-and-MP-534x462.jpg 534w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/younis-and-MP-696x602.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/younis-and-MP-486x420.jpg 486w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/younis-and-MP.jpg 835w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12237\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MP Rodger Godsiff &amp; Khalid Younis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ponatinib, often refered to as the \u2018wonder drug\u2019 is the only option left for the 43-year-old who has become resistant to all other medication and is unable to undergo a stem cell transplant due to a lung condition.<\/p>\n<p>Hall Green MP Roger Godsiff has since appealed to David Cameron in hopes to over turn the decision \u201cbefore it is too late\u201d for Mr Younis.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to Downing Street, Godsiff, backed by Nick Dakin MP (Scunthorpe), Mark Durkan MP (Foyle) and Henry Smith MP (Crawley), called on Mr Cameron to do all he can to help Khalid receive the treatment he needs.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">He wrote: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cI am very worried indeed that by that point it may be too late for Khalid. It would be utterly tragic for him to die when a treatment exists that could save his life.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cHe is unable to undergo a stem cell transplant due to also suffering from other conditions which exclude an operation of that magnitude.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cMy colleagues and I ask that you do everything in your power to aid him in accessing the drug in the interim to give him the best possible chance of survival.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Despite being readily available in Scotland and Wales, it is only available to patients in England with the rare\u00a0T315I mutation, which affects between 2 and 20 per cent of Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Younis, a former carpet fitter, even considered uprooting his family to Wales to become eligible for the treatment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;They say I&#8217;m not exceptional but talk to my mum, talk to my kids &#8211; they&#8217;ll tell you I&#8217;m exceptional.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It seems crazy. I have even considered moving to Wales so that I can get the treatment, but I worry about putting my family through it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We are in a very sad, vulnerable and stressful situation.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Birmingham MP Roger Godsiff is urging the Prime Minister to over turn decisions to deny life-saving medicine to cancer sufferer Khalid Younis.
