{"id":11624,"date":"2014-04-09T12:47:21","date_gmt":"2014-04-09T12:47:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/04\/09\/guru-nakak-sikh-academy-meet-arsenal-ladies-star-rachel-yankey\/"},"modified":"2014-04-09T12:47:21","modified_gmt":"2014-04-09T12:47:21","slug":"guru-nakak-sikh-academy-meet-arsenal-ladies-star-rachel-yankey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2014\/04\/09\/guru-nakak-sikh-academy-meet-arsenal-ladies-star-rachel-yankey\/","title":{"rendered":"GURU NAKAK SIKH ACADEMY MEET ARSENAL LADIES STAR \u2018RACHEL YANKEY\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>Was Part of the Government&#8217;s Sport Departments Drive <\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"\" vspace=\"10\" align=\"middle\" width=\"570\" height=\"225\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/Image\/ArticleImages\/Rachel-yankey-visit-570x225.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The girl\u2019s football team at the Guru Nanak Sikh Academy in Hayes, London, were honoured to meet England\u2019s most capped international footballer and Arsenal Ladies star, Rachel Yankey OBE.\u00a0As part of the sport departments drive to promote the engagement of girl\u2019s in football as well as reward them for their commitment to training, this certainly was an experience they will cherish.\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Head of Physical Education, Dina Khilnani, commented, \u201cwhen the opportunity came up to get in Rachel for the day I immediately thought of my girl\u2019s football team!\u00a0What an honour for them to meet an England and Arsenal player \u2013 an elite athlete!\u00a0My main thought was being Asian, opportunities like this for the girls are rare and Rachel will be an inspiration to them\u201d.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Inspiring the next generation is a priority for Yankey. In addition to playing, she runs the \u2018Rachel Yankey Football Programme\u2019, which provides coaching sessions in local schools.\u00a0More recently she has launched an education initiative with former deputy headteacher turned coach, Manisha Tailor, titled the \u2018Elite Athlete Experience Day\u2019.\u00a0The workshop is based on the concept of holistic player development and nurturing life-long learners.\u00a0Young people gain awareness of skills that they can translate into their everyday lives through:\u00a0decision-making, teamwork, reasoning and reflection.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The media package is curriculum specific to media literacy and introduced young people to knowledge and skills they would need as a journalist.\u00a0As well as deducing information and analysing reports, they took on the role of young reporters in interviewing an elite athlete.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cI have learnt new things that will be useful in further life.\u00a0The morning education workshop taught me that communicating clearly is important, as well as learning about different job roes in football\u201d (Amanpreet Rupra, 14).<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cIt was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about female football and about a footballers life.\u00a0Rachel has shown us how you can build on your current skills to really be the best\u201d (Amrit Dhillon, 13).<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The workshop placed much emphasis on being resourceful and resilient in solving problems, furthermore, discussing qualities that make a good leader beyond just the game of football.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cI now know how to be a better leader.\u00a0I have always been quite stubborn.\u00a0But by listening to others, especially through our group activity, I have understood that listening to others enables you to become a better communicator.\u00a0We should treat members of our team as family\u201d (Simran Chahal, 16). <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>During the afternoon session the Arsenal Ladies star put the girl\u2019s through their paces through a series of fun and active coaching sessions.\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cThe coaching session was great; we covered lots of different techniques and how we can use these skills in a match.\u00a0I stopped playing football but am now inspired to take it up again!\u201d (Harpreet Heer, 16).<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cThis was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I wish we were able to play football for longer \u2013 time flew by very quickly!\u201d (Esha Rudki, 12).<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Yankey praised how the girl\u2019s developed through the day and commented on the importance of using positive role models.\u00a0\u201cVery positive as they are all female and can relate to the fact that I have played football as a role model.\u00a0It is good to work with girls, but also to see how their confidence has developed through the day.\u00a0They started off as quite shy, but now they are more comfortable and able to express how they feel rather than being intimidated by boys \u2013 they are definitely more at ease.\u00a0Stereotypically football is not seen as a sport that is played by girls so I think we all have that in common.\u00a0It\u2019s good for them to see a female footballer and that you don\u2019t have to always be academic.\u00a0You can achieve in life, and use sport to do that\u201d. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The \u2018Elite Athlete Experience Day\u2019 is certainly an experience the girl\u2019s will remember, one in which they feel truly inspired.\u00a0\u201cI am inspired to take chances \u2013 you have to just go for it!\u00a0Don\u2019t let any obstacle put you down.\u00a0I would say, build a ladder \u2013 leap up and just fly!\u201d (Anmohl Singh, 16). <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>For further information regarding the education day please contact:<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Twitter: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/RachelYankey11 \">@RachelYankey11<\/a> \/ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/ManishaTailor1 \">@ManishaTailor1 <\/a><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Email: <a href=\"mailto:misstailor@hotmail.co.uk\">misstailor@hotmail.co.uk<\/a><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Website: <em>Launching soon<\/em><\/div>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Was Part of the Government&#8217;s Sport Departments Drive &#13;
