It\u2019s true that childcare isn\u2019t cheap. However, the childcare element of Working Tax Credit is designed to help cover some of the cost, so if you are eligible you\u2019ll still normally gain by working. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>It can be worth up to \u00a3122.50 a week (or \u00a3210 if you have more than one child). And you could be eligible whether you\u2019re employed or self-employed. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h3>Do you qualify for extra tax credits? <\/h3>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>In most cases you have to work for 16 hours a week to qualify, and you must use registered or approved childcare. This can include childminders, playgroups, nurseries or someone who looks after a child in your home. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"publish2_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/childcare-tax-credits\/eligibility?utm_source=publish2&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=www.theasiantoday.com\">To find out what is classed as registered or approved childcare for tax credits, see the Gov.uk website<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h3>How much help can you get? <\/h3>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>You can get help with up to 70% of your childcare costs, based on a maximum of \u00a3175 a week for one child or \u00a3300 a week if you have two or more children. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>That works out as: <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>up to \u00a3122.50 a week for one child, or<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>up to \u00a3210 a week for two or more children<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<p>You won&#8217;t necessarily get the full \u00a3122.50 or \u00a3210 a week\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the actual amount you get will depend on your income, the hours you work and your childcare costs. The lower your income, the more tax credits you can get. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"publish2_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hmrc.gov.uk\/taxcredits\/questionnaires.htm?utm_source=publish2&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=www.theasiantoday.com\">Use the Tax credits calculator on the HM Revenue &amp; Customs website to find out if you qualify and get a rough idea of how much you could be entitled to<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case study<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019ve been wanting to go back to work for a while now, but it\u2019s really expensive to put Tom into nursery for five days. Even four days, with Andy\u2019s parents looking after him on Fridays, was going to cost a huge chunk of my salary. Because Andy earns a good wage, we didn\u2019t think we\u2019d be eligible for tax credits, but it turns out we are&#8230; almost \u00a3100 a week.&#8221; \u2013 <strong>Gayle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h3>How to claim <\/h3>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re new to tax credits you\u2019ll need to get a claim form \u2013 just call the Tax Credit Helpline. They are also the people you\u2019ll need to speak to if you\u2019re already in the system and want to start claiming for help with childcare costs. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Contact the Tax Credit Helpline on 0345 300 3900 <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h3>Tax credits and Universal Credit <\/h3>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve probably heard about Universal Credit, the new benefit which is going to be replacing tax credits (and other benefits). It\u2019s being introduced in stages over the next few years from April 2013 to October 2017 \u2013 so most people won\u2019t be affected to start with. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Basically, Universal Credit will be paid as a single monthly payment that will include a standard allowance plus other &#8216;elements&#8217; &#8211; for example for childcare. So the amount you get will depend on your circumstances. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re already claiming tax credits for help with childcare costs, then the Tax Credit Office will tell you when you should claim Universal Credit instead. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re claiming help for the first time you will be told whether to claim Universal Credit or tax credits. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n<a class=\"publish2_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk\/en\/articles\/universal-credit-an-introduction?utm_source=publish2&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=www.theasiantoday.com\">Find out more in our guide Universal Credit \u2013 an introduction<\/a>&#13;<\/p>\n<h2>Other help with childcare costs <\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a single parent returning to work after a period on benefits, you may qualify for help with childcare costs. You can find out more at your local Jobcentre Plus (or Jobs and Benefits Office in Northern Ireland). <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h2>Help with childcare costs for students <\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Just because you have children, it doesn\u2019t mean you have to put your studies on hold.
