On a trip to Birmingham\u2019s New Street Station, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin explained further rail improvements were the reason for the rise. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are investing in the biggest rail modernisation since the Victorian era, and fares have a crucial role to play in funding these improvements. This is because building better infrastructure helps create jobs, building a stronger economy for us all. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work at Birmingham New Street is truly impressive and will make a real difference to passengers when it completes later this year. As we invest in projects like this, it is important that we recognise passengers\u2019 concerns about the cost of rail fares.
