Since it&#8217;s release in the US and India it has become a bestseller with reviewers\u00a0 describing the novel as &#8216;extraordinary&#8217;, &#8216;stunning&#8217; and &#8216;marvellously rich&#8217;.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong>In this short interview with Kiran Desai, we ask the talented writer what her motivations were behind the novel.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong>The inheritance of loss comes seven years after your debut novel. Was there any reason behind this long gap?<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>I was writing in a very different way from the way in which I wrote my first book.\u00a0The writing life just settled very deeply and I couldn\u2019t tell my work apart from my existence.\u00a0So I suppose I fell into another way of looking at time altogether.\u00a0It was easy to continue to write on and on.\u00a0It was the realization that the book would have to be curbed in order for it to work that made me finally stop and begin to cut and edit.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Your debut novel was received very well. Were you particularly nervous about writing a second novel that would live up to your talents as a writer?<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>It really is impossible to keep up nervousness or self-consciousness for seven years!\u00a0I was worried that the book wouldn\u2019t work, that it wouldn\u2019t hold together, but I think that will be a worry with each book.\u00a0One never really knows\u2026.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong>So many themes run throughout the novel. Was it difficult to keep them all running in a way that wouldn\u2019t confuse the reader?<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Yes, even I was confused.\u00a0This book was a monster.\u00a0The different themes had to be intertwined, the ideas had to work together, the emotional logic had to fit like a puzzle.\u00a0Then, of course, there was the story itself, the momentum of the book.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Cultural identity is one of the books major themes. Did you draw on your own experiences having been resident in <\/strong><strong>India<\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong>America<\/strong><strong> and <\/strong><strong>Britain<\/strong><strong> when formulating your characters?<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Certainly I did. I tried to look at my own experience as honestly as possible \u2013 which is difficult as I think the very process of immigration demands you live with a certain degree of hypocrisy. There are lies one is forced to tell oneself.\u00a0I drew on the stories of other people as well, people I know in the immigrant world of New York.\u00a0Also, on memoirs written by old ICS officials, Indians who had made the journey to study in England long ago.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong>How do you rate \u2018The Inheritance of Loss\u2019 against your debut novel, \u2018Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard\u2019? Do you think it shows your progression as a writer?<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>I\u2019m not sure how successful this book is, but I\u2019m happier with it.\u00a0It feels like a more honest effort, not a fake light story that I wrote purely for frivolous reasons.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"263\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"200\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"1\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/Image\/ArticleImages\/KiranDesai1Web.jpg\"\/>You dedicate the novel to your mother. How much of an influence has she had on your writing?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>So much that I can\u2019t tell the beginning or the end of it.\u00a0We\u2019re very close and sometimes we go on writing vacations, rent a house in a remote and silent place.\u00a0She\u2019s influenced my writing and my reading taste, of course, but I find that I also work very much in the same manner as she does.\u00a0I\u2019ve learned how to live as a writer from her.\u00a0Imperfectly, but I think it\u2019s a long journey.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Do you feel under pressure to be a successful novelist in your own right and not be compared to your mother?<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>I don\u2019t feel the slightest bit of pressure.\u00a0We\u2019re too close, I think, for such vocabulary to apply.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong>What are your thoughts on novel-to-film projects?
