{"id":10565,"date":"2014-01-27T11:39:30","date_gmt":"2014-01-27T11:39:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/01\/27\/power-to-the-people\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T17:28:11","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T17:28:11","slug":"power-to-the-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2014\/01\/27\/power-to-the-people\/","title":{"rendered":"POWER TO THE PEOPLE"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>GOVERNMENT BOOST TO COMMUNITY ENERGY<\/h3>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" hspace=\"3\" vspace=\"10\" align=\"middle\" width=\"460\" height=\"225\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Energy-backing-from-gov-460x225.jpg\"\/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">Local communities will be able to take control of their energy bills and help transform the energy system thanks to proposals unveiled today in Britain\u2019s first Community Energy Strategy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">Over 50 per cent of people surveyed by DECC said that saving money on bills would be the major motivation for getting involved with community energy schemes, and around 3.5million bill payers <\/span><\/span><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">are ready to get together with other people in their local community to take more control of their energy<\/span><\/span><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">. Meanwhile while four in ten respondents said they were already interested in joining a community energy group, and taking part in collective switching or collective purchasing schemes. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">Under the plans Government will broaden the support available for community energy projects, whereby people come together to reduce their energy use or purchase and generate their own energy.\u00a0 Plans include:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">\u00a310m Urban Community Energy Fund to kick-start community energy generation projects in England;<\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">\u00a31m Big Energy Saving Network funding to support the work of volunteers helping vulnerable consumers to reduce their energy; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">A\u00a0community energy saving competition, offering \u00a3100,000 to communities to develop innovative approaches to saving energy and money; and<\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">A\u00a0\u201cone-stop shop\u201d information resource for people interested in developing community energy projects.<\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey said:<\/span><\/span><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">\u201cWe\u2019re at the turning point in developing true community energy.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">\u201cThe cost of energy is now a major consideration for household budgets, and I want to encourage groups of people across the country to participate in a community energy movement and take real control of their energy bills.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">\u201cCommunity led action, such as collective switching, gives people the power to bring down bills and encourage competition within the energy market.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">Energy and Climate Change Minister, Greg Barker said: <\/span><\/span><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">\u201cThe Community Energy Strategy marks a change in the way we approach powering our homes and businesses &#8211; bringing communities together and helping them save money \u2013 and make money too.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">\u201cThe Coalition is determined to unleash this potential, assist communities to achieve their ambitions and drive forward the decentralised energy revolution. \u00a0We want to help more consumers of energy to become producers of energy and in doing so help to break the grip of the dominant big energy companies.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">Since 2008, at least 5000 community groups have participated in energy projects in the UK. The Ashton Hayes Going Carbon Neutral project in Cheshire, for example, saved local households an average of \u00a3300 a year through encouraging behaviour change and installing simple energy efficiency measures. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">In the future, the generation of electricity by communities themselves could put pressure on energy suppliers to drive down prices, creating warmer homes, cutting carbon emissions and diversifying the UK\u2019s energy mix.\u00a0 Estimates suggest that energy generation schemes involving local communities, such as installing solar panels on social housing buildings, could supply enough electricity for 1 million homes by 2020. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: arial,sans-serif\">The potential of community energy beyond this is even greater.
