However, political unrest and divided loyalties have taken its toll on what has now become a fighting battle. We look at the important dates that have shaped the country to what it has become.   <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1947 &#8211; Partition of British India. Pakistan and India become two independent states.\n<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" hspace=\"10\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"10\" align=\"right\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/bangladesh-independence-1949-2015-250x200.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<li>1949 &#8211; Formation of the\u00a0Awami Muslim League\n<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>1970 &#8211; First general election in Pakistan. Awami League gains majority.\n<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>1971 &#8211; Major\u00a0Ziaur Rahman\u00a0broadcasts the declaration of independence on behalf of Bangabandhu\u00a0Sheikh Mujibur Rahman\u00a0over the radio.\n<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>1973 &#8211; First\u00a0general election in Bangladesh\u00a0is held, Bangladesh Awami League secures a majority.\n<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>1975 &#8211;  Assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.\n<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>1977 &#8211; General Ziaur Rahman assumes the presidency. Islam is adopted in the constitution.\n<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>1981 &#8211; Assassination of Ziaur Rahman.\n<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>1982 &#8211; Lieutenant General\u00a0Hussain Muhammad Ershad\u00a0assumes power after a bloodless coup.\n<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>1987 &#8211; State of emergency declared after opposition demonstrations and strikes.<img decoding=\"async\" hspace=\"10\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"10\" align=\"right\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/bangladesh-independence-1987-2015-250x200.jpg\"\/>\n<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>1990 &#8211; Ershad offers resignation.\n<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>1991 &#8211; Bangladeshi general election. Bangladesh Nationalist party snatches victory.\n<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>1991 &#8211; Bangladesh cyclone\u00a0kills more than 138,000.\n<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>2005 &#8211; Terrorist group\u00a0JMB\u00a0simultaneously detonates 500 bombs\u00a0in 300 different locations.\n<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>2007 &#8211; Sheikh Hasina\u00a0arrested on extortion charges and denied bail.<img decoding=\"async\" hspace=\"10\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"10\" align=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/bangladesh-independence-2014-2015-250x200.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/>\n<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>2008 &#8211; Sheikh Hasina released on parole.
