In its 43 year history Bangladesh has garnered many achievements. However, political unrest and divided loyalties have taken its toll on what has now become a fighting battle. We look at the important dates that have shaped the country to what it has become. <\/div>\n

1947 – Partition of British India. Pakistan and India become two independent states.\u00a0<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

1949 – Formation of the\u00a0Awami Muslim League.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

1970 – First general election in Pakistan. Awami League gains majority.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

1971 – Major\u00a0Ziaur Rahman\u00a0broadcasts the declaration of independence on behalf of Bangabandhu\u00a0Sheikh Mujibur Rahman\u00a0over the radio.<\/div>\n

1973 – First\u00a0general election in Bangladesh\u00a0is held, Bangladesh Awami League secures a majority.<\/div>\n

1975 –\u00a0Assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.<\/font><\/div>\n

\u00a01977 – General Ziaur Rahman assumes the presidency. Islam is adopted in the constitution.<\/font><\/div>\n

1991 – Bangladesh cyclone\u00a0kills more than 138,000.<\/font><\/div>\n

2005 – Terrorist group\u00a0<\/font>JMB<\/font>\u00a0<\/font>simultaneously detonates 500 bombs<\/font>\u00a0in 300 different locations.<\/font><\/div>\n

2007 – Sheikh Hasina\u00a0arrested on extortion charges and denied bail.<\/font><\/div>\n

2008 – Sheikh Hasina released on parole. She flies to the USA for medical treatment.<\/font><\/div>\n

2009 – Sheikh Hasina assumed her office as Prime Minister of Bangladesh.<\/font><\/div>\n

2014 – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gains a third term in elections.<\/font><\/div>\n
