2008 has been a dreadful year for Bollywood seeing no significant box office gains except for the historic epic Jodhaa Akbar<\/em>, Abbas-Mustaan\u2019s suspense thriller, Ra<\/em>ce and comedy Singh Is Kinng<\/em> reaching the 1 million mark.<\/strong><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Such shortcomings have not deterred the Bollywood industry ready with big titles to lure audiences back into multiplexes in the New Year. <\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

2009 will be a year of reckoning for Indian film industry as Hollywood studios enter the foray of Hindi filmmaking. <\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

This will add extra pressure on existing production companies in Mumbai to go that extra mile in order to match Hollywood standards.\u00a0<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

So expect deviation from run of the mill family dramas as cinemagoers receive more choice in genres like horror, thrillers, action, comedies and suspense dramas.<\/div>\n

\"\"Warner Bros Pictures\u2019 first ever Bollywood Kung Fu comedy, Chandni Chowk To China<\/strong> kicks starts 2009 with a bang. <\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Starring Singh Is Kinng<\/em> superstar Akshay Kumar<\/strong> and Deepika Padukone<\/strong>, the screenplay focuses on the escapades of an Indian cook mistaken for a past Chinese war hero.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Akshay<\/strong> will also be starring in romantic comedy Kambakkth Ishq<\/strong>, about an Indian stuntman taking Hollywood by storm but is unable to find true love. He will be seen alongside Kareena Kapoor<\/strong>, Arnold Schwarzenegger<\/strong>, Sylvester Stallone<\/strong> and Beyonce Knowles.<\/strong><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Herman Baweja<\/strong> of the lacklustre Love Story 2050<\/em> fame will star in a cricket-based movie, Victory<\/strong>, with many cricket personalities playing themselves. Amrita Rao<\/strong> plays the female lead whilst Herman\u2019s girlfriend Priyanka Chopra<\/strong> makes a special appearance.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Crowd puller, Salman Khan\u2019s<\/strong> release God Tussi Great Ho<\/em> did not impress audiences. But he comes back as a mafia henchman willing to kill anyone, anywhere for a tidy sum in Bonny Kapoor\u2019s Wanted Dead Or Alive<\/strong> starring alongside Ayesha Takia<\/strong> who plays his love interest. <\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Salman<\/strong> will also appear in Vipul Shah\u2019s London Dreams<\/strong>, a story based on a rock band alongside Ajay Devgan<\/strong> whilst Veer<\/strong> sees him as an Indian gladiator fighting the British Raj. <\/div>\n

\"\"Perfectionist Aamir Khan<\/strong> still revelling in the success of Taare Zameen Par<\/em> and Ghajini<\/em> is seen in the most eagerly awaited project, Three Idiots<\/strong> directed by Raj Kumar Hirani of the Munnabhai<\/em> series and Eklavya The Royal Guard (2007)<\/em> fame.<\/div>\n

Three Idiots<\/strong> is a comedy drama depicting the adventures of three students starring Kareena Kapoor<\/strong>, R. Madhavan<\/strong> and Sharman Joshi<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/div>\n

Shahid Kapoor<\/strong> of the Jab We Met (2007)<\/em> fame appears in Paathshala,<\/strong> taking a peep at the Indian education system with versatile actor Nana Patekar<\/strong> and Ayesha Takia<\/strong>, also sharing equal screen space. Paathshala<\/strong> is a comedy drama with an underlying message of social relevance.<\/div>\n

Sanjay Leela Bhansali\u2019s Saawariya (2007)<\/em> did not give Ranbir Kapoor<\/strong> a prominent debut. But this lad showed great acting potential in Yash Raj\u2019s Bachna Ae Haseeno<\/em>.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Whilst Katrina Kaif\u2019s<\/strong> performance was appreciated in Singh Is Kinng<\/em> and Yuvraa<\/em>j, she now pairs up with dashing debonair Ranbir in director Raj Kumar Santoshi\u2019s Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani<\/strong>, a love story with humorous moments. <\/div>\n

Known for defying all Bollywood norms, the Bhatt brothers are back with a vengeance in 2009 with two releases. Their scariest Bollywood horror flick, Raaz The Mystery Continues<\/strong> sees a leaned Emraan Hashmi<\/strong> playing an artist who sees the future of a model (Kangna Ranaut).<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Meanwhile Adhyayan Suma<\/strong>n, Anjana Sukhani<\/strong> and Shahana Goswami<\/strong> of Rock On<\/em> fame star in Bhatt\u2019s Jashn<\/strong> . This musical tells the story of an aspiring rock star (Adhyayan). <\/div>\n

Tabu\u2019s<\/strong> grand comeback alongside Amitabh Bachchan<\/strong> in the spicy romantic comedy Cheeni Kum (2007)<\/em> received raved reviews from critics. She once again graces the silver screen in Toh Baat Pakki<\/strong> where she plays the elder sister of newcomer Uvika Chaudhary.<\/strong><\/div>\n

After giving smash hits like Masti<\/em> and Dhamaal,<\/em> Indra Kumar is back with an all out comic flick, Daddy Cool<\/strong> consisting of a star studded cast including a soundtrack from Boney M.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\"\"2009 would not be complete without Govind<\/strong>a making an appearance in Ravi Chopra’s court room drama Banda Yeh Bindass Hai<\/strong> alongside Tabu <\/strong>and Lara Dutta<\/strong>. Inspired by Hollywood movie, My Cousin Vinny (1992), Govinda<\/strong> plays a lawyer with a purpose. <\/div>\n

But on a comic note, Govinda<\/strong> joins forces with director Dhawan in the lavishly produced comedy flick, Do Knot Disturb<\/strong> with Riteish Deshmukh<\/strong>, Lara Datta<\/strong> and Sushmita Sen<\/strong> adding glamour and humorous moments.<\/div>\n

Mukta Arts\u2019 Yuvvraaj<\/em> received a lukewarm response by audiences but their next production Paying Guests<\/strong> may fare better. It is a comedy of errors starring Shreyas Talpade<\/strong>, Neha Dhupia<\/strong>, Vatsal Sheth<\/strong>, Riya Sen<\/strong>, Ashish Chaudhary<\/strong> and Celina Jaitle<\/strong>y. Chaos and confusion results when a couple rents out a room with a condition that it is meant only for a married couple. <\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Mukta\u2019s other comic flick Hello Darling<\/strong> is certainly bringing the house down as three stunning working girls – Gul Panag<\/strong>, Eesha Koppika<\/strong> and Celina Jaitley<\/strong> – teach their roving-eye boss a lesson he will never forget!<\/div>\n

Other movies to look out for include Shoebite<\/strong> and animation film, Aladdin<\/strong> starring Amitabh Bachchan<\/strong>. Irrfan Khan<\/strong> will be seen in Acid Factory<\/strong>, Hisss<\/strong> and in Shah Rukh Khan\u2019s production, Billu Barber<\/strong>.<\/div>\n

With great movies releasing, 2009 is certainly a year to watch out for on the silver screen!<\/div>\n
