{"id":10398,"date":"2009-01-05T17:49:23","date_gmt":"2009-01-05T17:49:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2009\/01\/05\/bollywood-2009\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T17:21:55","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T17:21:55","slug":"bollywood-2009","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2009\/01\/05\/bollywood-2009\/","title":{"rendered":"Bollywood 2009"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>Manish Gajjar previews the year ahead<\/h3>\n<div><strong>2008 has been a dreadful year for Bollywood seeing no significant box office gains except for the historic epic <em>Jodhaa Akbar<\/em>, Abbas-Mustaan\u2019s suspense thriller, <em>Ra<\/em>ce and comedy <em>Singh Is Kinng<\/em> reaching the 1 million mark.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Such shortcomings have not deterred the Bollywood industry ready with big titles to lure audiences back into multiplexes in the New Year. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>2009 will be a year of reckoning for Indian film industry as Hollywood studios enter the foray of Hindi filmmaking. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>This will add extra pressure on existing production companies in Mumbai to go that extra mile in order to match Hollywood standards.\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>So expect deviation from run of the mill family dramas as cinemagoers receive more choice in genres like horror, thrillers, action, comedies and suspense dramas.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"265\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"180\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/ChandniChowkToChina_180x232.jpg\"\/>Warner Bros Pictures\u2019 first ever Bollywood Kung Fu comedy, <strong>Chandni Chowk To China<\/strong> kicks starts 2009 with a bang. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Starring <em>Singh Is Kinng<\/em> superstar <strong>Akshay Kumar<\/strong> and <strong>Deepika Padukone<\/strong>, the screenplay focuses on the escapades of an Indian cook mistaken for a past Chinese war hero.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Akshay<\/strong> will also be starring in romantic comedy <strong>Kambakkth Ishq<\/strong>, about an Indian stuntman taking Hollywood by storm but is unable to find true love. He will be seen alongside <strong>Kareena Kapoor<\/strong>, <strong>Arnold Schwarzenegger<\/strong>, <strong>Sylvester Stallone<\/strong> and <strong>Beyonce Knowles.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Herman Baweja<\/strong> of the lacklustre <em>Love Story 2050<\/em> fame will star in a cricket-based movie, <strong>Victory<\/strong>, with many cricket personalities playing themselves. <strong>Amrita Rao<\/strong> plays the female lead whilst Herman\u2019s girlfriend <strong>Priyanka Chopra<\/strong> makes a special appearance.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Crowd puller, <strong>Salman Khan\u2019s<\/strong> release <em>God Tussi Great Ho<\/em> did not impress audiences. But he comes back as a mafia henchman willing to kill anyone, anywhere for a tidy sum in Bonny Kapoor\u2019s <strong>Wanted Dead Or Alive<\/strong> starring alongside <strong>Ayesha Takia<\/strong> who plays his love interest. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Salman<\/strong> will also appear in Vipul Shah\u2019s <strong>London Dreams<\/strong>, a story based on a rock band alongside <strong>Ajay Devgan<\/strong> whilst <strong>Veer<\/strong> sees him as an Indian gladiator fighting the British Raj. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"264\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"180\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/AamirKhanThreeIdiots_180x232.jpg\"\/>Perfectionist <strong>Aamir Khan<\/strong> still revelling in the success of <em>Taare Zameen Par<\/em> and <em>Ghajini<\/em> is seen in the most eagerly awaited project, <strong>Three Idiots<\/strong> directed by Raj Kumar Hirani of the <em>Munnabhai<\/em> series and <em>Eklavya The Royal Guard (2007)<\/em> fame.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Three Idiots<\/strong> is a comedy drama depicting the adventures of three students starring <strong>Kareena Kapoor<\/strong>, <strong>R. Madhavan<\/strong> and <strong>Sharman Joshi<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Shahid Kapoor<\/strong> of the <em>Jab We Met (2007)<\/em> fame appears in <strong>Paathshala,<\/strong> taking a peep at the Indian education system with versatile actor <strong>Nana Patekar<\/strong> and <strong>Ayesha Takia<\/strong>, also sharing equal screen space. <strong>Paathshala<\/strong> is a comedy drama with an underlying message of social relevance.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Sanjay Leela Bhansali\u2019s <em>Saawariya (2007)<\/em> did not give <strong>Ranbir Kapoor<\/strong> a prominent debut. But this lad showed great acting potential in Yash Raj\u2019s <em>Bachna Ae Haseeno<\/em>.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Whilst <strong>Katrina Kaif\u2019s<\/strong> performance was appreciated in <em>Singh Is Kinng<\/em> and <em>Yuvraa<\/em>j, she now pairs up with dashing debonair Ranbir in director Raj Kumar Santoshi\u2019s <strong>Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani<\/strong>, a love story with humorous moments. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Known for defying all Bollywood norms, the Bhatt brothers are back with a vengeance in 2009 with two releases. Their scariest Bollywood horror flick, <strong>Raaz The Mystery Continues<\/strong> sees a leaned <strong>Emraan Hashmi<\/strong> playing an artist who sees the future of a model (Kangna Ranaut).<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Meanwhile <strong>Adhyayan Suma<\/strong>n, <strong>Anjana Sukhani<\/strong> and <strong>Shahana Goswami<\/strong> of <em>Rock On<\/em> fame star in Bhatt\u2019s <strong>Jashn<\/strong> . This musical tells the story of an aspiring rock star (Adhyayan). <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Tabu\u2019s<\/strong> grand comeback alongside <strong>Amitabh Bachchan<\/strong> in the spicy romantic comedy <em>Cheeni Kum (2007)<\/em> received raved reviews from critics. She once again graces the silver screen in <strong>Toh Baat Pakki<\/strong> where she plays the elder sister of newcomer <strong>Uvika Chaudhary.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>After giving smash hits like <em>Masti<\/em> and <em>Dhamaal,<\/em> Indra Kumar is back with an all out comic flick, <strong>Daddy Cool<\/strong> consisting of a star studded cast including a soundtrack from Boney M.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"266\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"180\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/GovindaSalmanKhan_180x232.jpg\"\/>2009 would not be complete without <strong>Govind<\/strong>a making an appearance in Ravi Chopra&#8217;s court room drama <strong>Banda Yeh Bindass Hai<\/strong> alongside <strong>Tabu <\/strong>and <strong>Lara Dutta<\/strong>. Inspired by Hollywood movie, My Cousin Vinny (1992), <strong>Govinda<\/strong> plays a lawyer with a purpose. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>But on a comic note, <strong>Govinda<\/strong> joins forces with director Dhawan in the lavishly produced comedy flick, <strong>Do Knot Disturb<\/strong> with <strong>Riteish Deshmukh<\/strong>, <strong>Lara Datta<\/strong> and <strong>Sushmita Sen<\/strong> adding glamour and humorous moments.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Mukta Arts\u2019 <em>Yuvvraaj<\/em> received a lukewarm response by audiences but their next production <strong>Paying Guests<\/strong> may fare better. It is a comedy of errors starring <strong>Shreyas Talpade<\/strong>, <strong>Neha Dhupia<\/strong>, <strong>Vatsal Sheth<\/strong>, <strong>Riya Sen<\/strong>, <strong>Ashish Chaudhary<\/strong> and <strong>Celina Jaitle<\/strong>y.
