Birmingham’s iconic shopping store Selfridges will close in response to the Coronavirus outbreak and is unknown when they will reopen.

The flagship store is one of four being closed across the country.

Selfridges said: “The health, safety and wellbeing of our customers and team members is our utmost priority and we must do the right thing by the communities in which we live and work to help mitigate the spread of the coronavirus.

“It is with a heavy heart that we have made the decision to temporarily close our four physical stores in London, Birmingham and Manchester from 7pm this evening.”

Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s has announced food restrictions on shoppers to ease demand.

It came as theatres and cinemas shut down across the country and the Euro 2020 football tournament was postponed until next year.

In Birmingham, Symphony Hall and the Town Hall performances have cancelled and will shut their doors.
