Cheikh Ndoye has revealed he intends to ”do something great” while playing for Sengal during the World Cup.
The 32-year-old Birmingham City midfielder has spoken of his pride at being selected to play in the World Cup, and hopes to be part of a team that will also include Liverpool’s Sadio Mane, Cheikhou Kouyate of West Ham and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.
Senegal stand to play Poland, Japan and Columbia later this year and the games will take place in Russia. Only nine players were present in the first meeting as the rest is coming together at various stages, but Ndoye remains upbeat.
Speaking to Senegalese Press Agency, he said: ”We do not have a specific goal, but we will take match by match, with the ambition to go as far as possible.
”Every football player dreams of one day playing a World Cup finals or an African Cup of Nations.
”We are getting ready and praying to God to give us good health and form.
”We are aware that no match will be easy for us in this World Cup, we will take every game as a final.
”What I can tell you with certainty is that my teammates and I intend to do something great during this world.
”We have been waiting for this qualification for sixteen years, now that we are there, we must make the most of it and work hard to honour our country with dignity”.
If Senegal are eliminated in the group stages – Ndoye’s season will end on June 28th 2018. But if they progress, they have a chance of playing through till July. The quarter finals take place on July 6th and 7th. Ndoye will return to Birmingham City on a different timetable than the rest of his team, and may need a break before their summer tour.
