An eight-year-old boy has died after a grenade was thrown through the window of his room, exploding.

Yuusuf Warsame, from Birmingham, was on holiday in Sweden visiting relatives and sleeping in the living room of a flat when the grenade broke through the window. He died cradled in his mother’s arms on the way to hospital. Police suspect the attack is linked to a known underworld feud.

His father is currently trying to arrange for transport to Sweden to be with his family. Abdiwahid Warsame, a Dutch national, said “When I heard the news I had to sit; I could no longer stand up.

“My wife’s heart is broken. She told me that he died in front of her. She was covered in his blood.”

Yuusuf’s brother and sister were also present in the room but escaped alive. He was described as “happy, beautiful boy” by his cousin.

Ulla Brehm, a spokesperson for the police, told Radio Sweden “We now have a small boy dead because of the escalation of violence in the area. This is new to us. Before criminals have been shooting towards each other.”
