Wakefield-based charity Penny Appeal brought smiles to the faces of children and young people in Yorkshire last week with a visit to Martin House Hospice to distribute dozens of special presents.

The international humanitarian charity visited the Wetherby hospice on Friday, 10th June as part of its ‘Love Thy Neighbour’ work. The team – staff and members of the charity’s #TeamOrange volunteers, met some of the children and young people and handed out dozens of gifts and toys, as well as items for the communal areas and toiletries for when families stay at the hospice at short notice.

Sarah Tarpey, West Yorkshire Community Fundraiser at Martin House Hospice, said: “It was such a pleasure to meet with members from Penny Appeal here at Martin House. Children and siblings were excited to receive the lovely gifts, and had great fun playing together for the rest of the day. Giving children and families the chance to spend quality time together is an important part of the care we provide here at Martin House, and we’re really grateful to Penny Appeal for helping our families to create more happy memories.”

Harris Iqbal, UK Programmes Manager at Penny Appeal, added: “It’s been a pleasure to visit the children at the hospice. Despite their unimaginable pains and difficulties they remain positive and courageous, and are an inspiration to us all.”

Penny Appeal’s ‘Love Thy Neighbour programme is dedicated to supporting people in need in the UK and has recently been working to provide meals to the vulnerable and homeless, support the community of Carlisle in the aftermath of devastating floods, and offer counselling to women who have suffered domestic abuse.

“Our UK work is growing all the time with the help of our unique Penny Appeal bus and dedicated #TeamOrange volunteer family,” Harris continued. “Anyone who wants to take practical action to help communities in need can join us by signing up at www.pennyappeal.org or calling 03000 11 11 11.”
