TASHA Tah describes the moment Rishi Rich offered her a music contract as a “life changing moment”.
The sassy songstress joins an accomplished list of artists that have benefited from the music guile of Britain’s most successful Asian producer.
So who is Tasha Tah? Hailing from West London, Tasha has been described as ‘fearless and determined’.
Tasha comes from an influential and somewhat inspiring family. Her grandmother was well established poet in India and father Vikram Tah was a music mogul in his own right affiliated with consumer electronics giant and music record label T-Series. His career spanned over 30 years and he moved amongst legends like Amitabh Bachchan and Jagjit Singh. As a result, Tasha’s childhood is laced with memories of performing in front of music icons like the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
At the end of June Tasha released her first single ‘Rewind’ featuring Mumzy Stranger and we caught up with her for a quick chat…
Tasha your debut single ‘Rewind’ was released at the end of last month. Were you excited or nervous ahead of its release?
A bit of both really. Excitement to see one of my songs finally out there after years of trying to be a recording artist, and nervous because I hope everybody loves my music just as much as I've loved making it.
You’ve collaborated with Mumzy Stranger on the track. What does he add to the song?
Well Mumzy is Mumzy, he has his own unique swagger. He brings more of an urban edge to the track. Bashment and dance music mixed together! What a combination!
You were discovered by producer extraordinaire Rishi Rich – what was your first meeting with Rishi like?
I was shaking in my boots! I remember driving to his studio and it was one of the most surreal moments of my life. I couldn't actually fathom the fact that I was going to meet him. When I got to the studio, we instantly hit it off and had a musical connection. I showed Rishi all my ideas and songs that I'd written over the years and he told me he wanted to sign me there and then. It was a life changing moment for me.
Rishi has a great track record in developing artists – how much of an input do you have in your music?
A lot, I’ve co-written my whole album with Veronica and Rishi. I'm bursting with so many ideas, it’s a bit difficult for me to shut up! I'm very passionate about my music; my whole life is based around writing songs and that's pretty much what I do everyday. I like to add my own flavour, and change things around. That's the beauty of creativity - you can’t put a cap on it.
Yourself and Veronica are the only female singers in the Rishi crew – how do you deal with all the male testosterone in the studio?
Boys will be boys! The guys are lovely in all honesty; we are like a family and get along really well. Touring can be crazy fun but sometimes I miss female company. I'm a girly girl so it’s lovely when Veronica is around; she's my best friend and she always gives the best advice.
Did you always know that you were going to be a singer or did you have any other dreams as a kid?
Absolutely, from the age of six my parents were grooming me for the stage. I was always performing, singing and dancing in everybody's face. I knew that this was where my passion lies and it came naturally to me. However, even though I come from a family who has always been involved in the music industry, they are very practical people. They encouraged me to study and have a back - up plan, so I have a degree in Finance. Not as exciting as being a recording artist (laughs). My father always said, the most beautiful thing about life is that you can have as many dreams as you want.
Going back to your family; you come from a musical background– how much of an inspiration are your family in your career?
Growing up in a musical environment has definitely inspired me to pursue my dream. My family is very supportive and I don't think I would be able to do what I do without them. Every night in my house was a musical night; we would host Qawali nights, singing competitions. All a bit mad if I think about it now! We would have celebrities coming and going from the house. I was always encouraged to put pen to paper and I started writing songs from 14 years old. I was a bit young to understand what was going on but it’s been an inspiring and enjoyable journey so far.
Which music stars inspire you?
I'm inspired by so many singers, some for their voices, some for their performances and some for there writing skills. I love Madonna first and foremost. I think Justin Timberlake is an excellent songwriter; one of my favourites out there. Lady Gaga is totally inspiring with her stage performances, she is phenomenal to watch.
If you could work with anyone in the music industry who would it be and why?
Madonna, for an artist to have as much longevity as her says something. She is an amazing performer and has transformed herself year after years to cater to different generations. She is a woman of all ages and has evolved magnificently. Her music worked in the 80's and it still works today. She’s ever green!
Finally, what can we expect from you in the coming months?
